One of a Kind Wonders

April 1, 2010

Forget the crowded malls filled with similar and monotonous clothing and accessories. You can now skip the lineups at the grocery store and miss disappointment when delicious pastries from the bakery are all gone this Easter weekend.

Like the name suggests, if you want one-of-a-kind items and products, the One of a Kind Show and Sale is the place to go. I just came back today from its opening and was thoroughly impressed by all the unique things these small-business entrepreneurs have come up with.

There are more than 450 Canadian artisans, designers and craftspeople featured, and they are organized into five shopping districts to browse through — fashion, flavours, green, rising stars and outdoor. Avoiding the flavours section is a must — unless you want to buy delicious, organic and local foods, condiments and baked goods.

With all the extraordinary clothing and home décor accessories around me, Sarra Tang’s vendor caught my eye. It was her purses that I was drawn to in particular. They’re hand-made by the designer herself, out of canvas and wax, which makes them waterproof.  What I really like about them is that they have short handles on them and a long strap so that they can be worn two different ways.  They are so absolutely adorable and well-crafted that I was itching to buy one right there. She also had these stunning silk dresses that look like they will just flow off your body and feel extremely luxurious.

I’m definitely planning on visiting her store, Hoibo, in the Distillery District of Toronto. You can also check out her designs at 55 Mill St., Studio 111, Case Goods Warehouse #74.

In the meantime, visit the One of a Kind show, which is happening from March 31 to April 4. It’s at the Direct Energy Centre in Exhibition Place.
